Deputy Director-General, Innovation

As Deputy Director-General, Innovation you will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, direction and vision to the Innovation division to foster capacity building in innovation and facilitate long-term economic growth to create jobs for Queenslanders through collaborative partnerships. The role is a key leadership position to help make Queensland’s innovation economy stronger and foster a connected innovation ecosystem to meet the global challenges of tomorrow.

The division leads whole-of-government innovative practice and partners with industry, businesses, universities, start-ups, and the Queensland Chief Entrepreneur to build an innovation economy, translating ideas into commercial success, and to create pathways for new businesses and jobs across the state.

The Innovation division is currently comprised of two operational branches, Strategy and Operations, and a small divisional directorate. You will oversee a divisional budget and approximately 67 FTE.

 

Key Accountabilities

As the Deputy Director-General, Innovation, you will:

  • Provide strategic leadership, direction and coordination of the department’s innovation portfolio to deliver government priorities, enable the department to meet its strategic objectives, and provide excellence in client service delivery.

  • Provide expert advice to the Minister, Director-General, the Executive Leadership Team, and other Senior Executives in relation to the range, extent, and effectiveness of the services, products, and programs that are delivered.

  • Provide strategic leadership in the state-wide delivery, operations, and evaluation of innovative programs, initiatives, precincts and hubs, and services which are provided or funded by the department to generate meaningful insights and ensure alignment with the department and whole-of-government strategy.

  • Engage, partner, and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders including government, industry, universities, research and training providers, investors, entrepreneurs, social enterprises, and the community to achieve departmental and whole-of-government innovation outcomes.

  • Develop and champion strategies to attract, build and retain knowledge, experience, and talent within Queensland.

  • Provide leadership in the implementation of significant reforms and improvement in the delivery of innovation opportunities and oversee high level research and analytics to inform policy and decision making relevant to future service delivery and grant funding.

  • Lead the implementation of the Advance Queensland initiative to ensure successful delivery of the strategic priorities.

  • Represent the government, department, Minister, and Director-General in complex and sensitive negotiations and consultations with government agencies, key industry stakeholders, and community and Indigenous bodies in a range of forums and committees to ensure that the needs of the government and community are met. In doing so, you are expected to be influential, respectful, and credible.

  • Play a key role in sustaining a unified and effective DETSI Executive Leadership Team and be an example of collaboration across the department and government.

  • Set a clear vision, priorities and performance expectations for the division.

  • Model the values of the Queensland Public Sector and be an example of accountability and integrity.

  • Build an inclusive and diverse division, mentor aspiring leaders across the agency, and create a culture that can attract and retain the best talent.

    • demonstrate your experience leading major initiatives and innovative programs that have delivered real and lasting change.

    • demonstrate significant implementation experience and business acumen to drive delivery, manage risk, and achieve greater impact and value for money.

    • be a compelling communicator and advocate, able to represent the department persuasively, and build effective relationships with a broad range of partners and stakeholders with a client focus, demonstrating high level consultation, negotiation, coordination and public relations skills.

    • demonstrate the ability to inspire and engage staff, and build a diverse, respectful, and accountable and innovative workforce.

    • role model Executive leadership behaviours as outlined in the Leadership competencies for Queensland.

    • contribute to workplace safety, equity, diversity, respect and inclusion by bringing your unique experiences and perspectives.

  • You will need the legal right to work in Australia.

  • This position may require travel to other locations from time to time, including overnight stays.
