Deputy Director-General

Your Opportunity

You have the opportunity to join the Queensland public sector as a senior executive, to contribute to better outcomes for Queenslanders.  This role is responsible for the sustainable management of Queensland’s water resources to support our economy and community and to ensure the safe, secure and affordable provision of water to the Queensland community.

 

Key Duties and Accountabilities

 
  • Provide high level strategic advice and analysis to the Minister, the Director-General and other stakeholders on major strategic issues and risks regarding water resource management in Queensland.

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Water Resource Management Group in all areas including natural resource management, urban water security, regulation and compliance in water resources, dam safety, drinking water safety, riverine quarrying and water bore drilling.

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction on water issues for major water infrastructure projects including critical minerals, pumped hydro energy storage, and making water available for economic development and urban water security.

  • Represent the Queensland Government on National Committees including the National Water Reform Committee and the Basin Officials Committee for the Murray Darling Basin, and provide strategic leadership for other catchments of national significance.

  • Delivery of the Rural Water Futures Program.  This is a foundational program to improve transparency in Queensland water resource management, stimulate greater sustainable use of available unallocated water and ensure the community has confidence in the fair and suitable use of Queensland water resources.

  • Drive the delivery of services that meet the Government’s priorities within budget allocation, meeting service standards and continuing to identify innovative efficiencies.

  • Ensure strong linkages are developed and enhanced with collaborating organisations, particularly key stakeholders within local government, water resource sectors, and government owned corporations to ensure coordinated and integrated responses to customers.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the senior executive, other government agencies and collaborating stakeholders.

  • Represent the Government, Department, Minister and Director-General in complex and sensitive negotiations and consultations with the Commonwealth Government, State and Territory governments, government agencies, key industry stakeholders, community and indigenous bodies, in a range of forums and committees to ensure that the needs of the government, community and industry are met.

  • Continue to build an inclusive and positive culture, with high performance teams that seek continuous improvement, to deliver better outcomes for the people of Queensland.

  • Other duties as directed and required.

Other Requirements

 

Checks to ascertain criminal history, declaration of interests, previous discipline history and other due diligence checks, will be undertaken as required.

Travel away from the normal workplace will be required, including within Queensland and interstate. This may involve travel outside of normal office hours and/or overnight accommodation for extended periods.

Flexible work location arrangements, with a preference to a regional community will be considered for this opportunity to facilitate an adaptive and agile workforce.
